The Department of Zoology came into existence in 1991. Zoology comprises the study of animals and their behaviors. The subject helps in acquiring a great insight into animal behavior, the way they live, their needs, and many more things. Zoology deals with the environment of the animals, how they adapt to the changing environment and their needs like nutrition, genetics, characteristics, evolution, physiology, reproduction, development etc. The subjects also include the study of modern techniques like biotechnology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, microbiology etc. for an in-depth understanding of the zoological world. With the imbalance in the ecosystem today, the acute need has been felt to preserve nature and even animals that are on the brink of extinction. The Department offers graduate courses for first- and second-year’s students. Zoology is taught as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. Chemistry and Physics at college. The Department caters the need for the students from rural and backward area; making them a very good asset for society. It serves to inculcate social responsibilities and serve the society by not only becoming Teachers, Scientists, Zoologists but also as responsible citizens who bridge the gap between science and common man. Dr B R Ghorpade is working as Associate Professor and Head of the department. The department faculties have published 19 research papers in reputed journals. Dr Bhausaheb Ghorpade has worked as a member Board of Studies in Zoology at SPPU and actively participated in academic, administrative and extension activities of college. Dr. Ghorpade written four text books related to S. P. Pune University syllabus. The Department has organized study tour, blood detection & Hb. count camps per academic year. The students of department are participating in NSS camp, science exhibition, seminar competition and extension activities like Anand Mohotsav. The Department runs certificate course in vermicomposting technology.
